“The Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) has published its latest annual report, marking 15 years of monitoring and calling for urgent political commitment to tackle the evolving threat of human trafficking.
The report highlights several pressing issues:
- Child victims of trafficking are still not properly identified, are treated as offenders, and even punished for unlawful activities. GRETA emphasizes the need to strengthen child protection systems and to integrate anti-trafficking measures into humanitarian responses.
- Labour exploitation trafficking is on the rise. GRETA therefore urges states to strengthen labour inspections and the social rights of migrant workers.
- Technology-facilitated online trafficking poses new challenges for identifying cases of human trafficking, as well as for related investigations and prosecutions. GRETA stresses the need to invest in training and digital tools to effectively combat human trafficking.
In 2024, GRETA carried out evaluation visits in 13 countries and published 12 country reports (Andorra, Aruba/Kingdom of the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Monaco, Czech Republic, San Marino, Switzerland, Türkiye, and Hungary). Monitoring round tables were organized in 10 other countries.”
